You\u2019re just about as prepared as you can be for your\nupcoming trip this holiday season. Your clothes are packed, your airplane\nticket is reserved, and your hotel room is booked. Suddenly you develop a toothache<\/a>\nwhile your overseas, and you realize that you\u2019re not as prepared as you could\nhave been. What should you do in that situation? An emergency dentist has the answers.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Handling Dental Common Dental Emergencies <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No matter how prepared you are for your trip, emergencies\ncan still strike. Until you can find a local dentist, here are some steps you can\ntake during certain types of dental emergencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toothache <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re flying, you\u2019re likely to experience some degree of\ntooth pain because of the imbalance in the air pressure. Air can enter your\nteeth through a crack or cavity and then expand, causing pain. This discomfort should\nsubside not long after you land. If it doesn\u2019t, take an over-the-counter pain reliever\nas needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cracked or Broken Tooth <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is an urgent situation that requires immediate medical\nattention. Gather the pieces of your tooth. Rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply\na cold compress to the outside of your mouth to cut down on swelling. Then, find\nan emergency dentist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knocked-Out Tooth <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hold the tooth by its crown, not its pointed root. Gently\nrinse it off, but don\u2019t remove any tissue fragments. Place the tooth back in\nits socket if you can. Otherwise, hold it in between your cheek and gums, or in\na container of milk. You need to get to a dentist within the hour if you want a\ngood chance of saving the tooth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding a Dentist Abroad <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Countries in Europe and Canada typically have the same dental\nstandards as American dentists, so you should have no problem searching for one\nnear you. If you got travel insurance for your trip, call your provider and ask\nfor a referral to a dentist who is close and will accept your coverage. You\ncould also ask the hotel concierge if they know any nearby dentists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preventing Dental Emergencies While Traveling <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to dental problems, prevention is the best\ntreatment. Practice the following precautions to minimize your chance of a\ndental emergency:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get a Checkup <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you have a history of cavities and gum disease, visit\nyour dentist before your trip, just in case. They can spot any potential\nproblem areas and give you advice on how to handle your oral health overseas. You\nshould also get any needed dental work, like a filling or root canal, taken\ncare of before your trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get Some Dental Insurance <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many insurance policies don\u2019t provide coverage abroad. You\nmay need to get an additional temporary plan for your trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pack Supplies <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Take some pain relievers like ibuprofen with you, especially\nif you\u2019re prone to dental issues. Include plenty of toiletries like toothpaste,\nfloss, and a toothbrush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mind Your Oral Habits <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During your trip, avoid chewing on hard candies or ice cubes,\nas they could chip your teeth. If you\u2019ve been dealing with sensitive teeth, stay\naway from hot or cold foods and beverages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
