4 Procedures You May Need Before Getting Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most reliable and long-lasting ways to replace missing teeth. However, not every patient is ready for implants right away. In some cases, preparatory procedures are needed to ensure your mouth is healthy and strong enough to support them. Here are 4 common procedures you may need before getting dental implants.

1. Bone Grafting

One of the most common pre-implant procedures is bone grafting. After tooth loss, the jawbone can begin to shrink in a process known as bone resorption. Since dental implants rely on a stable foundation, insufficient bone density can make placement difficult.

Bone grafting involves adding bone material to the jaw to rebuild its strength and volume. Over time, the graft integrates with your natural bone, creating a solid base for the implant. Healing can take several months, but it significantly improves the chances of long-term success.

2. Gum Disease Treatment

Healthy gums are essential for dental implants. If you have periodontal disease, your dentist will need to treat it before moving forward.

This may involve deep cleaning procedures like scaling and root planing to remove bacteria and infection from below the gumline. Treating gum disease helps prevent complications and ensures the surrounding tissues can properly support the implant.

3. Tooth Extraction

If you have a damaged, decayed, or non-restorable tooth, it may need to be removed before placing an implant. Tooth extraction clears the way for the implant and prevents infection from spreading to surrounding areas.

In some cases, an implant can be placed immediately after extraction. In others, your dentist may recommend waiting for the area to heal before proceeding.

4. Sinus Lift

For patients needing implants in the upper back jaw, a sinus lift may be required. This procedure adds bone to the area below the sinus cavity, where bone is often thinner.

A sinus lift raises the sinus membrane and places bone material in the space to create enough support for an implant. Like bone grafting, this procedure requires healing time but plays a crucial role in successful implant placement in certain areas.

Why These Procedures Matter

Each of these treatments is designed to create a healthy, stable environment for your dental implants. Skipping necessary preparatory steps can increase the risk of implant failure and complications.

A Customized Treatment Plan

Not every patient will need these procedures. Your dentist will evaluate your oral health using exams and imaging to determine what steps are necessary before implant placement.

While additional procedures may extend your treatment timeline, they are essential for ensuring the best possible outcome. Taking the time to prepare your mouth properly can lead to a stronger, longer-lasting result.
